Official Launch of the ARC Training Centre for Battery Recycling
On 22 July 2025, the ARC Training Centre for Battery Recycling was officially launched at the National Wine Centre of Australia in Adelaide, marking a major milestone in Australia’s journey toward sustainable energy solutions.
Hosted by the University of Adelaide in partnership with UNSW and the University of Wollongong, the Centre brings together nine organisations — three universities and six industry partners – to address the critical challenge of lithium-ion battery waste.
Professor Shizhang Qiao, Director of the Centre, shared the mission: “We aim to close the gap in sustainable lithium-ion battery waste management by providing industry-led recycling solutions and training a skilled workforce to support Australia’s circular economy.”
The launch welcomed esteemed guests, including:
- The Honourable Joe Szakacs, Minister for Trade and Investment (SA)
- Ms Alison Beasley, Australian Research Council (ARC)
- Professor Michael Goodsite, Acting DVCR, University of Adelaide
- Professor Yan Jiao, Head of School of Chemical Engineering
- Dr Ebbe Dommisse, CEO, Iondrive Technologies
The event featured presentations, lab tours, and networking, with strong engagement from the research, industry, and student communities. Despite wet weather, the atmosphere was full of energy and optimism.
The Centre is now fully operational, delivering on its mission: developing industry-led battery recycling solutions, circular design, second-life use, and improved regulation, while training the next generation of innovators to drive Australia’s circular economy.
